Hopkins has a close bond with Sabrina Greenlee, the single mother who raised him. He attributes his achievement to her. Throughout his childhood, she worked at an auto factory and kept two jobs. Hopkins was a member of the track and field, basketball, and football teams for the Lions at D. W. Daniel High School in Central, South Carolina.

Hopkins had 57 receptions for 1,266 yards and 18 touchdowns during his high school football tenure, as well as 28 interceptions and five touchdowns on defence.

He played as a shooting guard and point guard for the basketball squad while accumulating 1,453 career points. The Lions earned their third South Carolina State Championship during Hopkins’ senior year, 2009–10, and he was named the Independent Mail’s player of the year. In both the State of South Carolina and the entire country, he was ranked as the 12th greatest wide receiver.

Several respected sports groups gave him rankings; ESPN placed him as the 29th best athlete. He was named to the state’s first squad of All-State athletes and The Charlotte Observer.

Hopkins’s mom Sabrina Greenlee was bathed with acid in July 2002 by Savannah Grant. Grant’s affair with Greenlee’s partner was discovered by Greenlee. Her neck, face, and back started to rapidly peel off as a result of the assault. She was picked up by her partner, put in his car, and driven to a gas station nearby.

Hopkins’ mother was left to parent him and his three siblings after Hopkins’ father, Harris Steve Hopkins, perished in a car accident on I-85 when DeAndre was five months old.

When the car accident occurred in November 1992, DeAndre’s parents were travelling back from a visit to relatives in Atlanta. After making a curve, Mr Hopkins’ Ford Mustang GTS hydroplaned on the wet road and flipped three times before hitting a guardrail on the driver’s side.

DeAndre’s mother was only slightly hurt and suffered a shock, but Mr Hopkins passed away eight days later from his wounds. Harris Hopkins had been dead for 25 years when he passed away.
