American actor Gavin MacLeod has achieved continuing television success within his career. He is best known as the ship’s captain, Merrill Stubing, on ABC’s The Love Boat. He played Murray Slaughter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. His career started in films in 1957.

The late Gavin MacLeod is also a Christian television host and author. He has appeared as a guest on several talks, variety, and religious programs. His career spanned six decades. He co-starred alongside Ernest Borgnine on McHale’s Navy (1962–1964) as Joseph “Happy” Haines. He was the global ambassador for Princess Cruises in 1986.

Gavin Macleod was married to Patti MacLeod. Patti MacLeod is an American entertainer who has worked in several films. She was born on February 15, 1931, in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. Her alternate name is Patti Steele.

Patti MacLeod is an actress, who has credit for Time Changer (2002), Wonder Woman (1975), and The Love Boat (1977). She made her acting debut in 1972, with a supporting role in ‘That Certain’. Initially, Gavin Macleod and Patti MacLeod got married on 22 February 1974.

After eight years of marriage, Gavin and Patti got separated. They got divorced on 8 December 1982. According to Patti in 1978, speaking to People, “Gavin was an alcoholic, he became a different person when he drank. But before we were married he said, ‘I will never take another drink because I don’t want to lose what we have.’”

Patti also added that Gavin had busy. He was busy working on “The Love Boat.” Gavin also admitted that he put his work before Patti. He said, “I put my work before her. ‘The Love Boat’ became such a giant job. I was all over the place promoting it. I was traveling all over, and I just felt, this sounds very egomaniacal, but I felt that I didn’t have time for her anymore.”

Patti spent some years looking for assistance from psychiatrists on both the West and the East coasts. She was invited by Shirley Boone, wife of Pat Boone to a Christian prayer group that contained several famous actresses who started to pray for Gavin.

Gavin MacLeod said that “From that day, I started to think about her. Something told me to call Patti. I called Patti. I went back to see her the following Monday and things haven’t been the same since.”

Gavin and Patti, after separating for some time reconciled. They re-married on 30 June 1985. Following Gavin’s conversion and his remarriage to Patti, he and Patti wrote about struggles with divorce and alcoholism in Back On Course: The Remarkable Story of a Divorce That Ended in Remarriage.
