Susan Rice children: Meet Jake and Maris

Publish date: 2024-06-03

Susan Rice, a former U.S. diplomat, policy advisor, and public official, has had a successful career on both the international and domestic fronts. During Obama’s presidency, Rice was both the National Security Advisor and the U.S. Ambassador to the UN. She assumed the position of director of the US Domestic Policy Council under President Joe Biden in 2021.

Rice, who was born in Washington, DC in 1964, received a Rhodes Scholarship to attend New College, Oxford, and a DPhil (Ph.D.) in International Relations from Stanford University. Rice played a role in the democratic transitions in South Africa and Nigeria while working on the staff of President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council before becoming assistant secretary of state for African affairs at the State Department.

Rice has spent her entire professional life fighting for gender equality, environmental protection, and the rights of working women and other marginalized groups around the world. As U.S. Ambassador to the UN, she advocated for these causes and pushed for American national security interests like sanctions against Iran and North Korea, Israeli sovereignty, and intervention in the Libyan civil war.

After the 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Rice withdrew her name as a possible replacement for Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State due to the backlash she received. Rice persisted in her role as Obama’s National Security Advisor despite this setback, and she helped the president achieve major policy goals like the Iran nuclear deal, the Ebola outbreak, the reopening of relations with Cuba, and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Her parents taught her the importance of education and discouraged her from discussing race. Not only did she graduate as valedictorian from the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., but she also played basketball for the New College, Oxford women’s team. After graduating with honors from Stanford University’s History Department, she went on to get her Ph.D. in International Relations.

Does Susan Rice have children?

Both Jake and Maris Rice-Cameron are the children of Susan Rice and her husband, Ian Officer Cameron. The couple tied the knot in 1992, and both of their children were born during their marriage. Maris is the younger sibling while Jake is the older. Not much is known about their private lives, but it is well-known that they are very close to their mother and have always shown their support for her in her endeavors in politics and public service.
