When he was 11 years old, he made the decision to become a professional bodybuilder after reading a Mr. Universe magazine. He weighed about 165 pounds when he was 15 years old. Later, Platz joined Armento’s Gym, where he met Olympic weight lifters Freddie Lowe and Norb Schemansky and discovered the correct squat technique. He quickly gained physical mass and strength.
