William Mapel is the ex-husband of Mare Winningham. William Mapel’s ex-wife Winningham is an American actress and singer-songwriter. She is the recipient of two Primetime Emmy Awards and has been nominated for an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award.

They both starred in the miniseries The Young Pioneers. Their marriage in 1981 lasted only a few months. She married her second husband, Bill Mapel, the same year. William Mapel’s Oldest child, son Riley Mapel, committed suicide on August 14, 2005. Riley Mapel was only 23 years old when he died. According to sources, he committed suicide in Los Angeles, California. Riley was studying acting at LACC’s Acting Academy at the time of his death. Riley was laid to rest in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills.

William Mapel’s ex-wife Winningham later married and divorced artist Jason Trucco after her divorce from Mapel. At the end of 2021, she and her long-time friend and fellow actor Anthony Edwards eloped.  The two have known each other for 35 years.

Winningham was raised a Roman Catholic but converted to Judaism in her early 40s. Though born an Irish Catholic, in 2000, William Mapel’s ex-wife felt her spiritual life was lacking, and, based on a recommendation from a friend, in November 2001, she signed up for a class given by Rabbi Neal Weinberg at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, California.

On March 3, 2003, she converted to Judaism and became a member of two Conservative synagogues, Temple Beth Am in Los Angeles and Temple Knesset Israel in Hollywood, California.

William Mapel’s ex-wife is also a folk singer-songwriter with a couple of albums. She did not attend the 1980 Emmy Awards ceremony, where she won a best-supporting actress award for Amber Waves (1980), due to an actors’ strike which boycotted the event. She did attend the ceremony when she won her second Emmy in the same category for George Wallace (1997).
